Music Video Development:

Narrative Footage Day 1: (25/11/13)
This was my first time filming my music video and my first time using the industry standard equipment. I had a rough idea about what I wanted to film because of my storyboard preparation, but I was extremely ill prepared because I just felt clueless in how to use the equipment and determine shot types. However, luckily one my actors does a Media course of his own so he knew how to use all the equipment and he helped me determine shot types because of his broad range of knowledge - e.g. using an OTS and reaction shot to show the shock in my actor/artist's face. I believe I will have to re-film the narrative and be more prepared for the next filming session but I do believe that I have learnt some valuable lessons; such as I need to be prepared, and I also learned that filming isn't actually too hard as long as I think about every shot carefully. The following pictures show my progression throughout my first day of filming:

Narrative Footage Day 2: (5/12/13)
In my second day of filming the narrative, I had a more clear idea about how to conduct the day's filming because I followed my storyboard fully and it was more a case of whether I could produce all the footage while it was still light. I also took out from college the industry standard tripod in combination with the larger industry standard camera to produce the best possible footage as I could. My co-producer and actor, Joe Dixon, helped me with filming whilst I directed various scenes. I also considered light more in today's filming session because I used an artificial light source on the indoor scenes for better image quality. However, even though I completed all of the filming, I wasn't happy with the image quality from the camera; I didn't know whether it was me or the actual camera itself; most probably the former. I will have to upload the footage to Final Cut Express at college to see how the final product turns out. If, I encounter any more problems, I may consider purchasing my own video camera so I can edit the footage at home because if I edit the footage at college, I don't believe I'll be able to meet the deadline. Personally, I believe editing the footage at college would be more difficult than if I edited the footage at home; I'd prefer the leisure of doing it home because it would take less time to do so. Regardless of this, I did achieve filming the whole of my narrative storyline and hopefully once I edit the footage together, it looks good enough with the use of fades/cuts etc.

Narrative Footage Day 3 (7/1/14):
For the third day of filming the narrative, I slightly changed my idea. I removed two actors from the initial narrative footage and added one actor to appear in a minor role which links to the performance. I changed my idea so the main focus was solely on the struggle of my main actor as he has to combat his ex-girlfriend leaving him. I changed cameras and used a Canon 600D DSLR because the quality of the industry camera was poor, in my opinion. The Canon DSLR allowed me to produce the best possible image quality because I had to consider various aspects such as ISO, aperture, frame rate and shutter speed (and more). I believe I will have to film a few extra scenes, such as filming a river scene to show my actor throwing a picture of his girlfriend in the river - I want to do this so there is a climax at the end of the video. I have a lack of pictures because I was filming on my own and didn't have the time to consider taking development photographs. What I have achieved in this filming session was probably greater than any other because I filmed almost all of my narrative aspect and I have the luxury of being able to edit at home on Sony Movie Studio which is helpful because I'm aiming to finishing editing the footage a short space of time. I used the industry standard lights from the Media department so that I could use a lower ISO for indoor scenes (such as the bedroom), and fortunately the natural light outside was good so I could use a lower ISO and produce higher quality footage.

Narrative Footage Day 4 (9/1/14):
For this day's footage, I unfortunately had no images to show development because I was far too concerned with actually gaining the footage because I'm running out of time to meet the deadline. I filmed the river scene at the request of my teacher to create a climax at the end of my video so there is more meaning. I will upload my footage to my editing software and add the river scene into the timeline. What I learnt from the day of filming is that I need to be less picky about getting 'the' perfect shot because I can edit footage on my editing software to improve shots - e.g. adding a black and white filter or removing shake from the camera with a fade transition. The problems that I faced with the day of filming is that, because it was a busy day, I had a lot of people constantly walking past while I was filming which made it difficult to get a shot with simply just my artist. However, to combat this I just had be patient because the location is near a supermarket chain and people use the bridge as access to the store.

Performance Footage Day 1 (6/12/13):
This was the first day of filming my performance. I believe that it was relatively successful because I managed to film my actor singing my choice of song from three different angles to create visual interest for my primary target audience. However, I only had a two hour time slot because I had to book out the photography studio. The way I filmed my performance was taking out a microphone and stand, and having my artist sing the song with a black background to conform to the conventions of the genre. I also took out two professional standard lights from the media department so the image quality from the industry camera improved and it will be less of a grainy image. The only real problems I faced was with regards to setting up the lights, but luckily my actor is a media and film student so he knew how to set up the lights because of previous experience. Hopefully, the footage looks good upon uploading I won't have to re-film my performance. The following pictures show the progression throughout the filming session:

Performance Footage Day 2 (8/1/14):
For the second day's performance footage, I took the advice from my teacher and filmed the performance aspect from one angle in a Sinead O'Connor style head shot. This was possibly the best piece of advice I had gained from all of my feedback because it allowed me to create the cohesion between lyrics and visuals; it allowed to be show the emotion of my artist and really represent the theme of sadness which is apparent in the performance and narrative. The way I completed this task was similar to the first performance filming session; I set up a black sheet behind my artist and I set up two professional lights in the corner of the room so the focal point of the shot was my artist because the light is on his face. I also used a tripod so that I had a consistent shot between different paragraphs of the song.  The reason for the lack of images to show the progression was because I am running out of time to meet the deadline and I was more concerned about actually filming the footage to add to my music video timeline on Sony Movie Studios. I had to re-film the performance for a second time because of my feedback from my teacher suggesting to change it. Also, because I've got my own camera, I needed to re-film because I couldn't upload footage from the college onto my own memory card because of restrictions. My camera supports SD cards, whereas the industry camera from supported a DV tape, and to sync footage from the college's cameras, you needed a firewire port which only Macs have.

Video Editing Day 1:
Linking to the second day of performance filming session, I edited the narrative and performance together to create my second draft of my music video. I didn't add any major effects apart from using a black and white filter on all of my clips to conform to my initial planning feedback where the target audience suggested that using a black and white filter would suit my song choice more than a natural contrast. I will gain further feedback from my teacher to see what further aspects I should remove/add/change to create a better music video, if possible. What I have learnt from editing my second music video draft was that I possibly need to re-film minor aspects and add an ending because the ending is very 'unknown' for the audience. The only problem I was faced was with settings of the editing software to upload the video to YouTube. However, I simply Google'd the question and several videos were available with the answers.

Video Editing Day 2:
In this editing session, I have completed the editing of my final draft of my music video. I added a finale to the video which my teacher recommend I do, to tie up loose ends from within the narrative. I also added fades/transitions between the narrative of the video because I needed to make my music conform to more of a music video 'look' - this was also because of feedback from my teacher. I encountered no real major problems because I have become familiar with using the Sony movie studios program.

Tutorials:
I watched this video because I was struggling about how to use my new camera so I found a tutorial about how to use the camera to produce the best possible image quality. An example of what I've learnt is to do with ISO; ISO determines how much lights the camera lets in. To produce the best image quality, you need a lower ISO or you sacrifice image quality with a grainy image. For further filming I have learnt some valuable tips with regards to settings and I will use this knowledge to create the best music video as I possibly can.

Digipak Development:

Introduction To The Task:
I have created first and final drafts for my digipak. I showed my progression through print screens.

First Draft:

As recommended by my Media teacher, I used a digipak template from www.disctemplates.com because it already had the correct measurements needed to construct the digipak for when I printed it out. This was a fantastic starting point because I didn't have to worry about measuring a real digipak product and enter the measurements into photoshop. This allowed me to get straight in with considering my images, layout and so on.

When I started adding images to the digipak, I was initially worried I simply wouldn't have enough to complete all six panels. However, by experimenting and using my hand drawn drafts, I was able to complete the initial front and back cover. I used 'Da Font' to create my logo for my artist and this could be the logo that I use consistently throughout products to create brand identity. I used a front cover of my main artist with a direct mode of address to create a personal connection between the artist and the target audience. I also followed conventions such as using track listing, barcode and stating the institution because these are simple concepts with regards to a digipak. For my next session of constructing the digipak, I intend to complete other panels of the digipak in an attempt to create a reasonably strong first draft.

For this digipak session, I added more images to create the continuity throughout the digipak - all the images are in a black and white filter. I adjusted the filter on the images to make them look darker because only using the filter on it own makes the image look poor in terms of quality. The only problem so far is that all the images look similar but once completed, I will gain target audience and teacher feedback to see what improvements I could make.

This is my final constructed first draft. I followed my second hand drawn drafts when it came to the layout design and I also followed general concepts from initial planning feedback, such as using a black and white filter and using an image of the artist on the front cover. I changed this draft slightly from my previous digipak session because I believe the image currently on the front cover was a lot stronger than the previous image. I know that there is a lot of work to be still done because the images on this draft are very similar so I will need to gain audience feedback to see what they believe can be done to improve the digipak. I must conform to their ideologies/feedback to create the best promotional package as I possibly can.

Final Draft:

To conform to ideologies of the target audience, they suggested that I simplify my digipak because there were too many images and it lacked variety. To begin, I went against using six panels by converting to a four panel digipak. I researched several major indie rock artists and many of them use four panels - such as The Arctic Monkeys with their album 'AM' (only four panels). This was once again a good starting point because I didn't have to measure a real life digipak because all the measurements were ready for when I physically construct the product.

For my final draft, I completed the whole task in one day so there was no need to use print screens for individual sessions because I simply applied myself; finishing the product in one day. I followed my audience feedback by using four panels instead of six, and using a mixture of text and images. My original first draft was solely image based and looked very unprofessional because I used a digital compact camera - the image quality wasn't professional. To combat this, I used my Canon 600D DSLR to create a more professional quality of image. Similar to my first draft, I adjusted the contrast of the images by making them darker and adding a greyscale filter. To further conform to my audience feedback, I used a note from the artist to the fans so there is a 'personal connection' between them because that's very conventional from the indie rock genre - they're both passionate about their music. Obviously my colour choices conform to conventions of the genre because of the two tone black and white colour scheme, similar to The Arctic Monkey's promotional package. What I have learnt from my audience feedback was vital in order to create this final draft, and I will now go away and construct the product.

Website Page Progression:

Introduction To The Task:
I have created first and final drafts for my website on website host 'Moonfruit'. I showed progression through the use of print screens.

First Draft:

I have decided to use Moonfruit because it allowed me to use difficult concepts in a very easy manner. I experimented with Wix but opted against the program because it simply didn't offer the tools that Moonfruit did.

I have begun drafting my website homepage. I have begun by adding tabs, a masthead and including an image relevant to the digipak to create brand identity. This doesn't link to my hand drawn drafts because I initially was going to have a latest news tab on the top left (below the tabs) but I decided to an image of my artist to create brand identity with other products.

This is my second session of creating my first website draft. I have added tour dates because I wanted to appeal to the ideologies of the target audience and match my audience research because they suggested that links to tour dates were vital in creating a good website.

Final Draft:

Fortunately, I have managed to power through and create my website in a single day because I didn't have any distractions and I was able to complete this because of target audience feedback; they suggested various aspects that needed to be improved. For a start, I just simply needed to complete my website as my previous drafts was poor because it was incomplete. I have followed various conventions such as a black and white colour scheme because I wanted to create brand identity throughout my products.

Target Audience Feedback:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I had to gain target audience feedback regarding my first drafts. I did this by hosting 1-1 focus sessions and taking notes about what they said, in order for me to improve all of my products.

Teacher Feedback For Drafts:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I needed to gain feedback from my Media teacher regarding my construction drafts. Firstly, I showed my teacher my products and I took notes about various improvements that I should make. Completing this task was vitally important because I needed an indication of how to improve my products in order to get a better grade.

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence Me?
My teacher's opinion is the most important above all; it helps that she is a part of my age demographic at the latter end. What I have learnt from her feedback is that I need to re-film my performance is a Sinead O'Connor style to really show the emotion of my artist. For my music video, I need to use more transitions and my teacher recommended that I use this between the narrative and the performance. For my digipak, my teacher explained that I should remove several images because they simply weren't good enough and I should possibly include a note the fans so there is a personal connection between fan and the artist himself. She also explained that I could possibly use more writing on my digipak back cover to conform to conventional alternative rock products. Finally for my website, my teacher suggested that I should include information regarding my artist at the top of my page to make my website seem interactive; appealing to the stereotypical target audience. This will influence my final construction because I will go away and complete what my teacher has suggested in order to create a much better product and appeal to my audience's ideologies.
