Planning

Lyric Analysis/Lyric-Image Video:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I had to conduct a lyrical analysis of the song that I will be creating a music video for (The 1975 - Me) and I also had to create a lyric/image video detailing my initial ideas for the music video. I did this by printing a copy of the lyrics and annotating it, detailing possible opportunities that could be completed in the music video. I also completed the lyric/image video through 'Windows Live Movie Maker' and exported the video through 'YouTube'. The video plays the song of my choice and has images to link to the lyrics of the video.

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
What I have learnt from this task was several ideas/opportunities in what I can include in my music video. A few examples of these includes my video could end in a graveyard - this follows the lyrics of the video to create cohesion between lyrics and visuals. I would need to gain permission to film in a graveyard. Another example could be that my actor leaves their house late at night or early in the morning which would once again follow the lyrics of the video to create cohesion. So overall, this will influence my planning because I can use this as core idea which I can slightly change and develop. For example, my narrative of the music video will definitely surround the lives of a male and female so the music video follows the lyrics in some format. My video doesn't have to follow the lyrics completely because I want my video to go beyond the lyrics to become more interesting.

Initial Ideas And Planning:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I had to complete initial planning of my three products and also consider location ideas, brand identity etc. I did this by creating mind maps, 'InfoGram' charts, 'YouTube' videos, 'Prezi' slideshows and more.

Initial Ideas For All Three Products:
These are my initial ideas (brief) for the three products. For my digipak, I've considered layout ideas and this links back to my target audience interviews research because they believed that an image based digipak made the best digipak, so my three layout designs on the sheet are all image based to appeal to their ideologies. For my website page, my layout/content consists of links to social media, information about the band and links to tour dates because the primary target audience from my research believed these were vital components into creating a good artist website. Finally for music video, I considered aspects of the music video such as how many characters do I need, and everything I considered I wanted to relate to my target audience feedback and the conventions of the genre to create the best video possible. I stated that I would like to use a mixture of both narrative and performance because that was the most popular answer from my target audience interviews and it also follows the conventions of a generic alternative rock music video. These are only my very first ideas so I will go into greater details into planning my three products.

Brand Identity Across All Three Products:
In this 'InfoGram' chart, it details aspects of brand identity (band name ideas, logo ideas, colour scheme ideas and typeface ideas. Please note: the images are actually of a higher quality but because they were imported into the chart, the resolution has become reduced for an unknown reason. In this brand identity chart, it relates back to all my research (target audience in particular) so I can appeal to the ideologies/preferences of the target audience.

Music Video Planning:
For my music video planning, I considered various aspects of planning the video - such as whether I want narrative, performance or a mixture of both. Everything I considered was in relation to the target audience, my initial audience research and relevant to the genre of alternative rock. I showed my ideas through another 'InfoGram' chart.

Website Page Planning:
For my website homepage, I have considered various aspects of planning - such as what tabs I need to include, what are the key elements of music websites and the layout of the website to create brand identity. Everything I have considered was in relation to the genre of alternative rock, in relation to the primary target audience's ideologies (stereotypes and my initial target audience research).

Digipak Planning:
For my digipak, I have considered various aspects of planning - such as what conventions I need to follow, what to include on the panels and how to maintain brand identity with the other products. Everything I have considered was in relation to the genre of alternative rock, in relation to the primary target audience's ideologies (stereotypes and my initial target audience research).

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
What I have learnt from my initial planning is various ideas about what I could do throughout my products which I will gain target audience feedback on to find out their ideologies. For example, I can find out what colour scheme they believe I should use throughout my products and I can find out whether I should use a greyscale filter in my music video, or a natural filter. Examples of some of my ideas for the music video include various narrative storyline ideas which I can gain feedback on to see what the target audience believe is the best idea. Another for the website includes whether it should be image based, text based or a variety of the two. Finally for the digipak, I had various ideas about what should be on the front cover; an interesting representational logo or an image of the artist. Overall, I will collect audience feedback to see what they believe would make the best products which will influence and develop my ideas.

Evaluation Of Initial Planning Ideas:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I needed to evaluate my initial planning ideas and explain how my ideas have developed throughout my three products. This was a simple task so I decided to create a podcast and directly embed the podcast from 'Archive' on to my blog.

Evaluation Of Initial Planning Ideas Podcast:

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
What I have leant from evaluation of my initial planning is that I must gain target audience feedback to see what would be the best ideas for my three products. I also need to gain the feedback from the audience to further enhance and develop my ideas. An example of what I've learnt from the initial planning is that I have three ideas for my narrative storyline and I need to gain feedback to what's the best one, and to see how I could develop the idea further to appeal to the ideologies of the primary target audience. This will influence my further planning because I need to gain the target audience feedback to see what the ideologies of the target audience are in order to construct my products.

Initial Planning Ideas Feedback:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I had to gain target audience feedback to help me decide my final concept for my three products. Everyone I asked was within the 16-25 age demographic and fans of the genre, many of them being Media Studies experts because they do the subject or have a past experience in the field. I completed the task by asking people to tick what they believed to be the best answer. Then I uploaded the tick sheets into a 'Prezi' slideshow and added a voiceover of myself analysing my results.

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
What I have learnt from completing this task was the ideologies/preferences of the target audience because their opinion is vital when trying to create the three products. A few examples of what I've learnt is that the colour scheme they believed was the most effective for the genre was black/white/grey because it conformed to the conventions of the genre. Another example would be that they prefer a black and white filter over the video (for my choice of song) because it created brand identity with the other two products and suited the style of the song. This will influence my initial planning ideas because I will consider all the answers that the target audience gave me for when I construct my three products. An example of how this will influence my construction is that I will definitely use a black and filter over my music video to create brand identity with my other products and suit the lyrics/style of the song.

Pitch: 'How Will Brand Identity Be Established Across The Three Products':

Introduction To The Ask:
For this task, I had to create a 'pitch' presentation and explain how brand identity will be established across all three of my products. I did this via a 'YouTube' video because I was imagining that I was presenting my product in front of, for example, businessman Alan Sugar to prove to him and his team that my product was viable, attainable and fitting for the artist.

Rough, Hand-Drawn Storyboard:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I had to create a rough, hand-drawn storyboard to present my initial narrative storyline idea. I only drew a short storyboard because with further planning I will create a longer and more detailed storyboard which I can follow when I end up filming the final product. The storyboard consists of the male reading the note left by the girl in his bedroom, calling his friend for advice, performance aspects, and the finale where he throws a picture of his ex-girlfriend in the river (the 'N' stands for narrative, and the 'P' stands for performance; also ignore the poor drawing).

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
I haven't learnt too much from creating the storyboard but it will influence my ideas because it has given me a core idea that I can develop with further planning so I can create a more detailed storyboard to guide me whilst in the process of filming. An example of how it will influence me is because within a scene I need to consider various shots to maintain visual interest and conform to the editing style of music videos.

Creative Storyboard:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I created another hand-drawn storyboard but I annotated the storyboard on 'Photoshop' to give a quick description about what's going on in the scene. I put my annotated storyboard images into 'Windows Live Movie Maker' and added the song to there is cohesion between visuals and lyrics. I the converted the video into a 'YouTube' format. I created this so that I can continue/enhance my narrative ideas because that's the trickier part of the two (narrative vs. performance). With the performance, the hard part is lip-syncing correctly and gaining the correct equipment to make the video look realistic.

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
What I have learnt from creating this slightly more detailed storyboard is that my idea doesn't match the lyrics solely because as a director, I need to be interesting in the sense that my idea is appealing. An example of not following lyrics completely is that I make no reference to the 'mother' and 'brother' apparent in the lyrics; my idea doesn't particularly involve a 'mother' or 'brother' but it does make sense with the visuals of the video. This will influence my ideas because I will continue to plan the video in sense that I will need to plan more shot types, and possibly locations, to create more visual interest and cohesion with the lyrics.

Location Choices/Recces:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I need to visit the locations that I will most likely be using in my music video. I took pictures of all the possible locations and noted whether any potential risks that could occur (this will link forward to the risk assessment documents). I created a 'Prezi' slideshow and gave a quick justification about what the locations were being used for.

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
What I have learnt from this task is the locations that I will be most likely be using for my music video. The pictures don't give enough justice to the standard of video I'm hoping to create but with effects and use of the actors, the video will come together nicely and look visually interesting. This will influence my ideas because (risk assessments to follow) I know of any potential hazards or dangers that could occur and how I could combat them. For example, in the bedroom I need to remove the wires running across the floor so there isn't any danger for the actors whilst walking around.

Permission To Use Locations, Song And Equipment:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I needed to prove that I have gained permission to use locations and equipment. I have completed this by screen-shooting emails and scanning letters of permission which have been signed.

Permission To Use Song From Institution:

Permission To Use 'Bedroom' And 'Living Room Locations. Signed By Owner:

Permission To Use Blackbridge Road Underpassing And River Location:
These locations are for full use of the public so there is no reason to ask for permission because they are free for all to use.

Permission To Use Photography Studio. Email And Reply Below:

Permission To Use Industry Camera And Tripod For First Filming Session - Approved Verbally By Lorna (Teacher):

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
N/A but it will influence the fact I can go ahead and use the locations and equipment.

Risk Assessments:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I needed to create 'risk assessment' documents for the locations that I will use for my music video. I did this by filling out the generic 'risk assessment' form.

One Examples Of The Risk Assessment Documents For My Locations:

-Living room: To view, please click HERE. [Initially used for narrative scene; later converted into performance studio]

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
What I have learnt is the possibilities of any risks or hazards that could take place in my location choices. An example of this being that in the living room, I need the room to be free of any wires/leads so there isn't a trip hazard for myself or the actors.

Costume/Prop List:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I needed to create a costume and props list for my music video and images for my digipak and website page. I did this on 'Windows Live Movie Maker' by listing everything that I would need for the performance and narrative aspect of my music video (ties in with digipak and website) followed by an image to give visual detail. I uploaded the slideshow/video to 'YouTube'.

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
What I have learnt from this task is what costume and props I need for my music video. A few examples of what I need include black clothes for the performance to conform to the conventions of alternative rock. An example of what I need for the narrative would include a picture of the main actor's ex-girlfriend (not actual) and a note detailing why she has left; I would need these to help create my idea and to create cohesion between visuals and lyrics. This will influence my ideas because I need to go away and collect/gain permission for props/costume/equipment to begin creating all three of my products. For example, I would need to print a picture of a girl off to use as the picture.

Filming Schedule:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I had to create a filming schedule for my music video. This is the first draft of the filming schedule and any changes made for future filming dates will be detailed with a new filming schedule on the homepage of the blog (diary entry).

To view the filming schedule, please click HERE:

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
What I have learnt is that I know everything I need for my first set of filming sessions and I will distribute these to my actors. It will influence my ideas because if I need to re-film aspects of my music video, I will create a new filming schedule which I will post as a blog entry on my homepage.

Actor Sourcing:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I needed to host auditions for roles in the music video. I advertised auditions by sticking a poster on the Drama Department Bulletin and I posted a tweet of the 'JPEG' poster on my 'Twitter' account to reach out to the wider-local community. A reasonable number of people appeared for auditions but obviously I only needed several actors to actually appear in the music video so narrowing it down to the select few was difficult. Due to time constraints and people opting not to be filmed for their audition, I only filmed one audition which is below and uploaded to 'YouTube'. After this, I needed to give final actor profiles and justifications which I completed on 'InfoGram'.

Poster To Advertise Auditions For Roles:

Audition By Joe Dixon For Lead Role:
Comment regarding audition (20/10/13): "A fairly strong audition but not strong enough to land lead role. There's a good chance he could gain a supporting role as one of the minor actors. Still to be confirmed."

Actor Profiles And Justifications:

What Have I Learnt And How Will This Influence My Ideas?
What I have learnt from this task is who will be appearing in my music video because they are the correct people to help make my music video successful. For example, Oscar is the perfect choice for the lead role because he's a fantastic actor with a good experience and passion for acting - plus he looks the part, too. This will influence my ideas because I can further plan my ideas around the actors. I can pitch my idea to my actors to give them a better understanding of what I'm trying to accomplish and I can give them my filming schedule to see whether they can meet the times needed for filming.

Further Planning Of Ancillary Products:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I had to create hand-drawn drafts and produce computer roughs to further plan my digipak and website. I also had to create a schedule with regards to images for the ancillary products to help me maintain brand identity throughout products.

First Hand-Drawn Drafts:
*Ignore the fact it says 'Acacia Avenue'. I completed these drafts before I gained the target audience feedback regarding artist names*.

Second Hand-Drawn Drafts:

Computer Roughs:

Pitch To Media Studies Class:

Introduction To The Task:
For this task, I had to present a 'pitch' to my Media Studies class to gain expert feedback about how I could improve my concepts for my final products. I did this by creating feedback sheets which I handed to every member of the class present in the lesson. After I handed the feedback sheets round the class, I presented my 'pitch' to the class and asked them several questions about how I could improve my concepts. An example question was 'What would you do to improve my digipak concept?'.
